Ripping the sock

Well that didn't work at all. Here is what the pattern is supposed to look like.

This is what I got, modeled on my hand so you can see the stitch "pattern," if you can call it that. What on earth happened? The holes are supposed to be just offset and together line up down the leg. Mine are somehow swirling, or really just all over the place.

The pattern calls for starting and ending rows with yarn overs, which I found fiddley. I shifted the chart so the YOs were on the interior, but I can't imagine that's why my lace looks so awful. I was having some trouble keeping track of which row I was on (it seems I can not reliably count to four) and I'm hoping that's the reason.

So back we go. I'll rip back to the ribbing and start the pattern over again, taking better care to track which row I'm on. Wish me luck!

Looks like you are using the same book I do, just the next page or so ;-)
These are the gull wings, right?
Could be you also missed some YOs?!?

I love vine lace. It might help if you shift your needle (looks like you are doing magic loop) so the end for a row is either the a plain knit stitch or a set of decreases. I don't like starting or ending rows with a yarnover either, but I find that a little easier to handle with magic loop than the DPNs. Good luck!

Looks like the same thing that always happens to me when I try to make the Calmer Aura cap, which has zigzag offset lace yo's. I would always forget some yo at the end or beginning of a row and then the lace would make a diagonal. The same thing happened to another knitter I know when she tried to make the green gable top too.

So watch those yarn overs - forgetting just one will make the lace totally different!
