Sockapalooza start
I finished these socks today.
Yarn: Lorna's Laces in Tuscany
Pattern: Stephanie Pearl McPhee's sock recipe from Knitty Gritty
Needles: Two circular Knit Picks Options, size 1
Size: The cuff is 2 inches, the leg is 7 inches.
This frees up my needles to start my pal's Sockapalooza socks. The only specification she gave was in preferring warm earth tones to rainbow colors. So is this yarn too bright?
It's burgundy, and I think would work well in the lace pattern I'd like to do (vine lace from Socks Socks Socks). Here is a finished sock I found in the pattern, though it's in a variegated yarn.
Thanks for any advice you'd like to leave.

What's showing up on my monitor is a gorgeous, rich warm burgundy. I don't think you could ever call burgundy 'too bright'. It's a warm colour, by definition. My sock pal said the same sort of thing, only specifying 'no purple'. I dithered about it for quite awhile, but then I realised that you just have to take them at their word, and go for it.
Maybe I'm a purist, but when I think of "earth tones" I think of browns...maybe greens with browns, maybe a little bit of autumn colors with browns, but nevertheless, browns. I (personally) would consider this burgundy to be in the jewel-tone family. But that's just this gal's opinion. I am also of the opinion that I will love whatever socks my pal knits for me just because she knit them. (I'm one of those people who appreciates someone else's cooking all the more, no matter what they made, simply because I didn't have to make it.)
It is a lovely yarn and I agree--it will go GREAT with that pattern.
definitely not a "bright" color. I think it will be lovely and your sp will love it!
I think it is a very good tone not too bright at all I would love to have socks this color :)That is a very nice pattern I think it is a good match!
Definitely not too bright... get knittin'!
I love Matchmaker Merino for socks. The solids are wonderfully warm colors, and I think your yarn in particular is a terrific fit.
I don't think that it's too bright at all (at least not on my monitor), and it definitely feels like a "warm earth tone".
I think that the burgundy is a lovely color choice. IMO, not too bright at all.
As someone who also likes earthy colors, I think those are great. At least on my monitor, they look very lovely and rich. I think that pattern would go very well with those.
I like how your socks turned out!
The burgundy yarn looks fine on my monitor--I would definitely consider it a warm earth tone.
I really like the color choice and I think it will look great with that pattern. I think it fits what your pal requested pretty well :o)
I like the Jaeger--I don't think it's too bright at all. Besides, I'm not sure how can it be too bright if she likes warm earth tones to rainbow colors--that's a pretty wide range. I made the Chullo from Knitty in that same yarn (in shades of green) and really like how it knit up. Someday I'll need to buy more of it.
Thanks for wishing me luck on the fair entry. I'll post the results in a couple of weeks.
Coming from someone who ADORES rainbow colors (I am a bit of a magpie--oooh, something gaudy and brightly colored!!) I would call the Jaeger maybe not an earth tone, but warm and friendly. No, I don't think it's too bright.
I'm also of the opinion that whatever you make for your sock pal, it will be LOVED and APPRECIATED-- so don't worry about the color so much!
That is a beautiful burgundy color.
